, Global News

Renowned journalist Patrick Brown joined the Global National family in October as its new Asia correspondent based in Beijing, where he has lived for the past several years.

Prior to Global, Patrick worked as an independent documentary producer in China's capital city. His company, Jilu.tv, established in 2007 with director Yan Yuping, released its latest film, ‘We Shall Gather at the River’ this past March.

From 2006 to 2008, Patrick was the CBC's senior Asia correspondent. His job took him across the region, producing documentaries and series for the public broadcaster.

Patrick was born in the United Kingdom, and educated at King Edward’s School in Birmingham and Downing College in Cambridge. He settled in Montreal in 1971.

In 1974, Patrick began to establish his long and respected career in journalism, joining Radio Canada International as an editor. Two years later, he became a national reporter for CBC Radio News in Montreal. He moved to London as a foreign correspondent in 1980. Patrick then served as bureau chief in Beijing from 1990 to 1996, and again from 2003 to 2006. In the interim, he was based in New Delhi and Bangkok.

Reporting for the CBC and its French-language network SRC, Patrick covered major events in dozens of countries in Europe, the Middle East and Asia, including the rise of the Solidarity movement in Poland in 1980, the Israeli invasion of Lebanon in 1982, the collapse of the Marcos dictatorship in the Philippines in 1986, Tiananmen Square and the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, the Gulf Wars in 1980, 1990 and 2003, and Afghanistan before during and after the Taliban regime.

Patrick is the recipient of three Gemini awards, which honour the best in Canadian television, and the author of “Butterfly Mind.”
