Dear Educator,
Thanks for your interest in Everyday Hero. Over the months that
Everyday Hero has been aired, we have frequently been told that the
segment would be useful for teachers who are involved in social
responsibility education and other classes which focus on teaching
citizenship.
The common theme through all of our stories is an individual who sees
a need, and who takes responsibility for addressing it. At their most
elemental, they are all stories about citizenship, and the power of one
person to make a difference.
We hope you'll find these materials useful. Each individual video
item runs under 3 minutes. In some instances, there is additional video
material related to the subject available on our website. You may want
to use one item to set up classroom discussion...or use several.
This site is a work-in-progress, and we're keen to hear feedback from
educators about how we can make this site better. We'd also love to
hear how you used the items, and what kind of response you got. Please
send your comments to: globalnationalfeedback@globaltv.com
Some suggestions for classroom discussion:
- What makes a person a "hero"?
- What does being a good citizen mean, and how does this person (these persons) demonstrate that?
- What are needs in your community? How could you address them?
Some suggestions for classroom activity:
- Choose one of the projects profiled in Everyday
Hero, and use it as a model to create a similar project at your school;
or choose a way to support the project or organization of the Everyday
Hero.
- Nominate an "Everyday Hero" to Global National.
(See the link at the right.) Students can develop class presentations
about people that are heroes to them. Following class discussion, the
class can vote and send in their nomination to Global National.
