Accused in Quebec triple murder to undergo psychiatric evaluation

SHERBROOKE - Pascal Morin will spend the next ten days in a Sherbrooke hospital to determine if he is mentally fit to stand trial in the deaths of three family members over the weekend.

At the Sherbrooke Courthouse Monday morning, lawyers for the crown and the accused agreed to have a psychiatric evaluation done on the 35-year-old Townships man.

Late Friday night, police say Morin attacked and killed his two nieces, aged 8 and 11, and his 70-year-old mother in the small town of St-Romain.

Police have not confirmed what weapon was used in the incident, but have said that it was not a gun.

The young girls were the granddaughters of the town mayor.

The motive behind the tragedy remains unclear.

"He's not doing too well," Morin's lawyer told Global's Domenic Fazioli in court this morning.

"He has a history of problems, that's all I can tell you."

Morin returns to court on February 23rd.

The results of his mental assessment are expected to be made public.
